First Wild Brown trout on the fly
first riber fishing lesson with Lancashire fly fishing
First Grayling

River Fishing, for some, is the pinnacle of fly fishing. Pitching your skills against a wild adversary is a completely different proposition

from those used in catching stocked Rainbows. In fact there is no real comparison between the two disciplines of fly fishing,

both are enjoyable on the day but river fishing is something I would encourage every fly fisher to experience. Take the scenery,

sometimes the solitude, the tactics, the extra skill factor needed to make up for the fact that you are fishing in moving water.

Just try it for yourself - see what you think.

The Beat I use on the River Ribble the following season applies

Salmon Feb 1st to Oct 31st

Sea Trout May 1st to Sept 30th

Brown Trout Mar 15th to Sept 30th

I can help you in a number of ways:

The equipment - you may not have the specialist river rods and lines? All equipment is included, rods, reel, lines, leaders, flies etc. The rods, reels and lines I use are all from Greys or Sage. Normally you need waders for all river fishing, I do not provide these as the range of sizes is too great but I can advise you which ones to buy yourself.

The casting - you will need a greater degree of accuracy and stealth. River fly fishing is not about casting distance it's about accuracy - being able to cast to the target. It's about overcoming the fact that the water is moving, most times at differing speeds and power. So you need to be able to deliver the fly and minimise any unnatural drag on the fly.

The water craft - how to read the water to work out where the fish are likely to be, given the conditions that day.
The tactics - dry, wet, nymph, czech, duo, spider? Which will work the best and why?

The flies - observation, is there anything hatching? What fly will best imitate the natural .

Stealth - Wading is a simple task but it needs to be done safely and quietly. Airborne sound is not too much of a problem when river fishing but underwater sound carries a long way and is the main threat to spooking wild fish.

Ian Hutchinson from Bradford - " Excellent instructor, top day and most importantly we caught fish...."

Helen Compton from Bradford - "Very enjoyable, felt I learned some good skills that increased my enjoyment..."
